Chairman

Prof. P. Söderberg
University Hospital
Uppsala, Sweden

Per Söderberg

Per Söderberg is a Professor of Ophthalmology. He is now working at the University Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden in the Department of Ophthalmology, Neuroscience and is a visiting professor at Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, University of Miami, Florida, USA, College of Optometry, University of Houston, Texas, USA, and Dept. of Ophthalmology, Dalian Medical University, Dalian, China. His main research interests are effects of optical radiation in the eye with an emphasis on ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation, cataract measurement, and anterior segment surgery. His work includes exploration of the pathophysiological mechanism for UVR induced cataract, development of a new model for determination of UVR and infrared toxicity in the eye, determination of the influence of variables such as age, gender, pigmentation, exposure time and fractionation of exposure, on UVR induced cataract and effects of chronic daily exposures to UVR on the lens. Dr Söderberg is an ICNIRP SCIV member since 2002.

Commission Members

Dr. K. Schulmeister
Austrian Research
Centers GmbH
Austria

Karl Schulmeister

Karl Schulmeister received his MSc in physics in 1992 from the Vienna University of Technology and his PhD in biophysics in 2001. Since 1994 he is head of the „Laser and Optical Radiation Safety“ group in the Austrian Institute of Technology in Seibersdorf, Austria. His team has developed a probabilistic risk analysis model for space based lasers, as well as computer and ex-vivo models for laser induced ocular damage. He is co-author of the book „Laser Safety“. He also serves as lecturer for Non-ionizing Radiation Protection at the University of Technology in Graz. Dr. Schulmeister is head of the Austrian delegation to IEC TC 76 (Laser), where he is also the technical secretary of Working Group 1 on radiation safety standards. Since 2002 he serves as Associate Director of Division 6 “Photobiology” of CIE, the International Commission on Illumination. He is an ICNIRP SCIV member since July 2003.

Mr. B.E. Stuck

Bruce Stuck

Bruce E. Stuck is the Chief, Ocular Trauma Division of the US Army Institute of Surgical Research located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.  He has 30 years experience in laser bioeffects research and is the author/co-author of research on the ocular and cutaneous effects of laser radiation, the effects of laser exposure on vision and performance, the assessment of laser accident cases, the treatment of laser-induced retinal injury and assessments of laser eye protection.  Mr. Stuck is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Laser Institute of America, the Biomedical Optical Society of the SPIE and the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) Z136 Committee which develops the ANSI Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers. He is an ICNIRP SCIV member since July 1999.

Other SC Members

Dr. R. Greinert
Elbe Kliniken
Dermatology Center
Germany

Rüdiger Greinert

Rüdiger Greinert is a biophysicist. He is head of the Dept. of Molecular Cell Biology at the Center of Dermatology, Elbekliniken, Buxtehude, Germany. His main research interests are molecular mechanisms of UV-induced skin cancer in humans. His research group is currently investigating the cellular damage response of human skin cells (in vitro and in vivo as well as in organo-typic tissue cultures) after UV-irradiation of different quality (UVB vs UVA vs solar simulated radiation) and different exposure patterns (chronic vs. acute). Research focuses on the role of UV-damaged epidermal stem cells in photocarcinogenesis. Special interest is in the field of UV-induced epigenetic changes which might be responsible for the induction and progression of skin cancer. Dr. Greinert is member of several Boards of the German Commission on Radiological Protection (e.g. radiation risk, nonionizing radiation). He is the Secretary General of the European Society of Skin Cancer Prevention, EUROSKIN and has been, beside others, responsible for development, planning and implementation of the German Skin Cancer Screening Programme. He is an ICNIRP SCIV member since July 2009.

Dr. B. J. Lund
US Army Institute of
Surgical Research
USA

Brian J. Lund

Brian Lund received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1996. He is a biophysicist for the Ocular Trauma Division of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, where his main area of research has been the study of ocular effects (primarily retinal effects) of laser exposure, especially for the purpose of establishing laser exposure limits. Elected a member of the ICNIRP SCIV in 2010, Dr. Lund is also a member of the bioeffects technical subcommittee and the standards subcommittee of the Americal National Standards Institutes (ANSI) Z136 Committee which develops the US national guidelines for the safe use of lasers

Robert J Thomas

Robert J. Thomas is a physicist with the Air Force Research Laboratory. He received his B. S. degree in physics in 1989 from Pittsburg State University, KS and his Ph. D. (Physics) in 1994 from the University of Missouri. He has worked for the past fifteen years in the field of laser-tissue interactions, with an emphasis on numerical simulations. He is currently a member of SPIE, IEEE, and the American Physical Society, as well as a Fellow of the Laser Institute of America. He is the current Chairman for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accredited Standards Committee ASC Z136, which develops the American National Standards for Safe Use of Lasers.
